| Description | Pastor Click addresses some hard issues about church conduct, specifically gossip. The church is not the building, its the people, a "called out assembly". We ought to take church seriously. Titus Chapter 1 - Paul commissions Titus to "set in order the things that are wanting" and to rebuke the unruly and vain talkers, whose mouths must be stopped. Things that will help you with gossip. I. The rage of gossip (Titus 1:11 - there mouths must be stopped) Gossip hurts people, gossip is usually people who are doing nothing complaining about people who are doing something. Gossip subverts people (Titus 1:11). Gossip under-minds the integrity of our church. James Chapter 3 - the tongue is a little member, but behold how great a mater a little fire kindleth. The tongue is an unruly evil full of poison. we must bridal our tongue. People who gossip to you will also gossip about you. II. How to recognize gossip? 1. It tends to be secretive (don't tell anyone else but ...) - If they trust you enough to tell you a secret they should trust you enough to use your own good judgment weather to share it or not, do NOT promise to keep it, they should trust you to be wise, to know if you should share it or not. (Prov 11:13, 20:19) 2. They have spiritual pride. (pray for ____ because they are in allot of sin ...) - they try to gain your trust by acting spiritual, and tell you how spiritual they are. 3. They are stealthy, they don't talk to the right person (mt 18 - if you have a problem with a person go to that person first). They chose who they will tell (people they think wont get them in trouble) If someone is not part of the problem, or part of the solution then they don't need to know. 4. Strangers to the truth (Titus 1:12) Gossip often contains a seed of truth but not whole truth, each person in the chain tends to make the story a little riper. Gossip is usually an exaggerated lie. III. The Remedy for gossip. Refuse to take part, Silence is consent, refuse to listen even, tell them you do not want to here it. if someone comes to you with gossip confront them (Titus 1:13 rebuke them sharply that they may be sound in the faith) Prov 26:20 - no wood no fire, no tail-barer no strife. Rom 16:17-18 - mark them which cause divisions, avoid them, they serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, they deceive the hearts of the simple (paraphrased) Prov 26:4 |
